Causes of worm infection

Mother's milk: an unwelcome inheritance

'mother's milkThe dog roundworm, and the hookworm Ancylostoma caninum, both have another trick up their sleeve: they can be transmitted to puppies with their mother’s milk.

Some of the worm’s tiny larvae lie dormant in the host bitch’s muscles until she starts producing milk. Then, reactivated by her hormones, they migrate to the mammaries and are passed on to the puppies as they suckle.
